We'll begin our story on the evening that Mr. Debienne and Mr. Poligny, the managers of the
opera, were throwing their retirement party. La Sorelli, one of the main dancers, was in her
dressing room going over the speech she was to give for the two retiring managers Suddenly, her
door opened and a group of young dancers rushed into the room.
"It's the ghost!" cried little Jammes, one of the ballet girls. She locked the door.
Sorelli believed in ghosts. Little Jammes's words made her hands shake, but she tried to look calm.
"Have you seen him?" asked Sorelli.
"Yes! As plainly as I see you now!" said Jammes.
