participation in sport. This had two benefits: it counteracted some of the physical symptoms of prolonged
confíinement to bed, but perhaps more importantly, helped patients feel less isolated and depressed by their
changed circumstances. Sport allowed social interaction and a sense of personal achievement, and to some
extent, a return to normality.
