Dinosaur Fossils In the past century, one of the most amazing findings by scientists has been dinosaur bones. Dinosaur bones also called fossils are the remains of old dinosaur skeletons. Sometimes scientists who discover dinosaur fossils just find footprints in the dirt. Other times, they find enough fossils to make a complete dinosaur. But how do dinosaur bones that are millions of years old get turned into fossils? How can something buried beneath dirt and sand last for so long? Fossil Formation When dinosaurs or other ancient animal or plant life dies, a gradual process begins. (A) Then the dead dinosaur is eventually covered by dirt and mud. (B) This leaves the hardest parts of the dinosaur- bones and teeth. (C) After thousands of years, the chemicals in the buried dinosaur's body go through a series of changes. (D) As the bone slowly decays, groundwater gets inside the bone. The minerals in the groundwater are replaced with the chemicals in the bone. These minerals are the same as the surrounding rock. As the dinosaur bone turns into a fossil, it becomes a heavy, rock-like version of the original dinosaur. It is now officially called a fossil. When scientists look for dinosaur fossils, they look for specific rock types. Fossils are usually found in either shale, siltstone, mudstone, or sandstone. Preservation (E) Preservation is an important word when studying fossils. (F) It means to keep something in the same condition for a long time. (G) One of the best examples of dinosaur fossils is in the Field Museum in Chicago. (H) The Tyrannosaurus Rex (or T-Rex) was the fiercest and largest dinosaur on the planet. It was a carnivore, or meat eater. T-Rex liked to eat smaller dinosaurs for dinner, using its powerful jaws to crush its victims. The skeleton of Sue was discovered in the dry plains of South Dakota in 1990 by Sue Henderson, a scientist. By studying prehistoric fossils, we can learn about life millions of years ago.

What things didn't students use to have? School in Ancient Times In Greece, 2,500 years ago, only the sons of rich people went to school, and they started around the age of seven. Students first learned to read and write syllables and then words, and then they copied famous sayings. They wrote on wax tablets with a stylus, which was like a pen. After they learned to read and write, they used to study Greek poetry and historical works. Music was an important part of their education, and so was physical training. Girls stayed at home with their mothers and learned how to keep the house. In ancient Rome, boys and girls from wealthy families received a bilingual education. They had to study Greek and Latin. Students usually had classes outside, if the weather was good, or in the teacher's house. Teachers used to beat students who didn't pay attention or who were lazy. 2 In ancient China, many children never got a chance to go to school. With the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), the emperor paid for free education. Only boys were allowed to study. They typically used to start school when they were about six years old, and there was one teacher for the whole school. There weren't any math or science lessons. Students learned to read and write, and they used to memorize pages of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius. His teachings stressed the importance of duty, family, and hard work. Boys used to work very hard to pass the government tests. Students with the highest scores could get a job in the government. Around 500 A.D., girls also began to learn how to read and write in Buddhist temples, which were spreading in China.

This might not be as unusual as you think. It seems that these days more and more people want to live somewhere special and out of the ordinary, and if they can't buy what they want they are quite 5 prepared to build it from scratch. If an underground home doesn't appeal to you, how about living in the tree tops? Dan Garner, a tree surgeon from Gloucestershire, certainly thinks that this is the way to go up in the world. 35 For John Mew and his wife Josephine their home really is their castle. They have built their own English castle in the Sussex countryside. The building is brand new with all the luxuries you would expect from a house that cost 1 more than £350,000 to build. However, when you first see it from the outside it would be easy to think that you are looking at an ancient monument. The building has a lot of the features of a traditional castle, including a keep, a moat and a drawbridge. "My choice of house is 1 somewhat eccentric and building it was very hard work, but we've got the perfect place to live," Mew says. Although some would say that the building is impractical and may be cold in harsh British winters, he certainly has got a unique and spacious home. "When our family became short of space at home our solution was to build a luxury tree house in the garden. The tree house is built into a spruce tree six metres above the ground. It has one main room, a bedroom and a balcony running around two sides." Garner is so happy 40 with this practical extension to his home that he thinks he can convince more people of the benefits of living in the trees. He wants to set up his own enterprise making more of the deluxe tree dwellings, saying, "Tree houses are airy, secure and comfortable and the only disadvantage 45 is that they might not be suitable for people who suffer from hay fever or a fear of heights!" 2 If you don't look carefully, you might not even see the home that Jonathan Ridley-Jones and Shanon Ridd built at all! That's because the house is a converted underground water tank. The only thing that can be seen from the surface is a door leading into the hillside. "We've 2 never wanted to live in an ordinary house," Shanon says. "Living below ground means that our home is quiet and very cosy none of the usual draughts. It doesn't damage the local surroundings and has very low fuel bills. Some of our friends find it dark and feel shut in 3 when they first visit, but they soon get used to it!" Even people who live in more ordinary settings sometimes can't resist doing something to make them stand out from the crowd. One extreme example of this 50 is Bill Heines' house in Headington, Oxfordshire. Until one morning in 1986, his house looked much like all the others in his street, when suddenly overnight a 7.5 m long fibreglass shark appeared to have crashed through the roof. The shark was a sculpture by local artist John 55 Buckley. At first some people complained that it might be dangerous or that it spoilt the look of the neighbourhood, but engineers checked that the sculpture was safe and the 'Headington shark' has become a well-known and popular landmark. It seems that no matter where you live, 60 you can always do something to make sure your house says something about who you are. 4 5 D It Why Ridle AI B 6 C D 7 Wh Ric A B 4 C D V

Oh dear.. thats terrible. Can you explain further? Julie: Its because we've already done too much damage to the planet, and now that darmage is permanent. In my opinion, we're past the point of trying to protect the planet. Now we should try to save ourselves. Garry: Surely there's something we can do. What's the cause of all this damage? Julie: Well, the cause is pollution, and its effect is climate change. It's destroying our planet, and it will continue to do So. Its to the point that we cannot stop it. This will flood many coastal cities. They will be lost forever beneath the water. Flooding isn't the only problem being caused by climate change either. Climate change is causing drought, famine, fires, and other disasters to happen more often all over the world. [C) The bottom line is: we're losing the fight against climate change. Garry: But, Professor, if we stop poluting the environment, can't we prevent these disasters that you are predicting? Julie: Hmm. Well, it couldn't hurt.
