がダメな理由を教えてください。

hangは自動詞なので、主語+hangで「主語が掛かる」の意味になります。
displayは他動詞なので、主語+be動詞+displayedで「主語が展示されている」の意味になります。

(On the wall opposite the door) hung three paintings. MVSの第一文型で適切な英文。

(On the wall opposite the door) displayed were three paintings. と受動態にしていれば可。
(On the wall opposite the door) were three paintings displayed. でも可。こちらのほうが自然。
