ごめんなさい，どこの部分なのかいまいちつかめていないのですが，下線部(4)の訳でしょうか。
全文がうまく見えないので何とも言えませんが，文中下線部(1)の後ろに被験者を３つにグループ分けするという旨が書かれていると思います。the second excercised four hours LATER などと。このlaterから「4時間後」という訳が出るのだと思います。
