recallingの解釈はおっしゃる通りheardが知覚動詞でSVOCのCの部分にあたる現在分詞です。

overcome〜の部分は、後ろにby〜があるところをヒントとしてovercomeが過去分詞だと気付けるかどうかじゃないでしょうか。come-came-come
それが分かれば受動態の分詞構文とわかると思うので。

overcomeを「打ち勝つ」とだけ覚えてて、語法の知識がない場合は厳しいかもしれないけど。

誤解なきように確認ですがovercomeから後ろ全部じゃなくて、カンマとカンマの間のovercome by〜の部分だけが分詞構文ですからね。
分詞構文が文の途中に挿入されているってことです。
