よって

分詞構文の意味上の主語sが存在するタイプであると判断します。

解答にeach period~の前に前置詞が無いので分詞構文になるようなことがあったのですが、大抵は前置詞の有無で分詞構文は判断できるものですか？

普通の分詞として直前の名詞を処理すれば良いです。

ただ、
on 名詞 Ving
in 名詞 Ving
あたりだと、主従関係を意識して
上から
SがVするとすぐに
SがVする時に
と訳出することもありますので
これも意識しておいてください。

SV…名詞 ，Ving… .
となっていたら
Ving以下が分詞構文になってる確率は50%以下で
その直前の名詞に対して補足的に説明してる(→これも分詞の働きです)ことの方が多いです。
(これは大量の英文に触れてきた上での肌感)
