Frederick Douglass was a black man who fought to end slavery
and make the US a better country. He was born in 1818 to a female
slave. At the age of six, Douglass was sent to do hard labor on a large
farm. He and about 150 other slaves lived in a cruel environment. They
had to deal with regular beatings if they_38_hard enough.
He was later sent to work for Edward Covey, a farmer known for
how badly he treated slaves. One day, Douglass fought back 39
of his beatings. Other slaves protected Douglass, showing how weak
Covey actually was.
In 1838, Douglass found a way to run away from Covey's farm.
He headed north to New York, where 40 Finally, as a free man,
Douglass began working as a writer. In 1845, Douglass wrote the
first of three books that told his life story. Two years later, he founded
a Black newspaper. In his later years, Douglass worked for James
Garfield, the president of the US. Throughout his life, Frederick
