Every_spring, people who live outside of Oaxaca City in the south of Mexico are
waiting for the first rain. After the rain, chicatanas, large flying ants, have to leave their
nests to look for food. During this time, a great number of ants fly slowly and then fall
to the ground. People are excited to collect a lot of them in a short time.
Chicatanas only come for one or two days a year. If people miss the fun of catching
them, they will have to wait for another year.
What do people in Mexico do with the ants they catch? They may toast and eat
ple
them or make them into sauce. Both are mouth-watering...
In 1990, Larry Peterman, who made candies in Pismo Beach, California, had a new
idea. He decided to put insects in candies. His idea worked, and his candy shop became
very famous in America.
Peterman's candies sell well, and most of them are given as gifts. They are the most
popular for Halloween. However, not many people really eat them. Those who eat them
think they taste great.
Peterman is interested in looking for new insects for his candies. Let's see what
kind of candies will come up this Halloween...
