They volleyed back and force, the resident eventually failing to justify why he really needed a test.なんですが、これって文構造どうなってるんですが、最初のThey volleyed back and forthって分詞構文ではないですよね？主節の主語も同じなのでわざわざTheyをつける必要性がないですよね。でも、volleyは辞書で調べたら「質問を連発する」と書いてあったので、これはTheyが質問を連発させられた、という意味だと考えられるので分詞構文としか考えられません。しかも接続詞がないので文と文がカンマで繋がれているとは考えられないです。解説には、「何度か応酬があり、」という訳だけ書いてあったのですが、これは慣用表現として覚えるしかないのでしょうか？文法的な説明は出来ないのですか？
