ここでのvolunteer work は何を指しているのですか？

would use to drive my mother's students from their 10

years, my dad bought tickets for dozens of kids to go
to the park. I went on most of those trips too.

この部分を見た感じだと、母親が昔教師をやっていたとしか考えれませんね…
母親が昔からボランティアをしているのであれば、「ボランティアの生徒たち」になることもあるかもしれません

volunteer work は普通に「奉仕活動」ではダメでしょうか？
文脈がないのでなんとも言えませんが、親たちがそのアミューズメントパークに何か恩を感じているとかでしょうか
"that one decision"(ここからだと何を指すかは不明)に"appreciation"(感謝)しているのかなと

あまり答えになっていませんがどうでしょう…？
