まず、Her statements = a total absence にはなりません。
なぜなら、構文は下記ように SVO(S≠O) であり、SVC(S＝C) でないからです。
2. Her statements(S) show(V) a total absence(O) (of understanding)(M) (of basic infant psychology)(M).
文の意味：彼女の発言は、基本的な幼児心理を全く理解していないことを示している。
