I do not think that ordinary human beings can be happy without competition, for competition has been,ever since the origin of Man,the spur to most serious activities. We should not,therefore,attempt
to abolish competition,but only to see to it that it takes forms which are not too injurious.

【訳】
通常の人間は、競争がなければ幸せにはならないと私は思っている。というのは、人間が誕生して以来ずっと、競い合うことが極めて重要な活動への推進力となってきたからだ。それ故に私たちは、競争を無くそうとするのではなくて、その競争が害になりすぎることの無い形をとるように、ひたすら努めて気をつけるべきである。

【質問】
not〜but…構文の説明で、

not が否定するのはbutの直後と同質の語(句、節)ですから、attempt not to abolish but (only) to see to it thatと読めば文がはっきりしてきます。

と書かれていたのですが、訳を見てみるとabolish以下を否定しているのではなく、attempt 以下を否定しているように見えます。この部分の解説をもう少し詳しく聞きたいです。

と読めますね。

もし、to seeのseeが抜けていれば
not attempt but see
という風にnot側もbut側も動詞になるんですけど
ここではto seeになっているので、
ここにはattemptが省略されているんだな、としか読めないような気がします。

attemptはここではtry to doのtryと同じで、
訳のなかではnot〜の部分の「競争をなく【そうとする】」という部分に表れています。

but〜の部分の訳には確かに明確に表れていないのですが「ひたすら【努めて】気をつける」というのがそれかなと思います。

でも結局一緒ですよ

どちらもattemptはto abolishにだけじゃなくてto seeにもかかっているから、文の形は違うけど、言ってること同じです。
