To prove yourself an intellectual in the United States, all you have to do is make a remark like: "I never watch TV" or "There's never anything worth seeing on TV."
It is certainly true that a good deal of what passes for entertainment on TV is not worth the effort of walking across the room to turn on the set.

ほぼほぼ文字通りでいいと思います。

turn on 〜は、〜の電源を入れる
setは画像の通り「テレビの受像器」（日本語の方が難しいですね）
walking across the roomは　部屋を横切る
テレビって、リビングのドア開けて奥の方に置いてたりしません？そんなイメージでいいと思います
