すごく～なので...だ
という構文です。
そのニュースにすごくショックだったので、時間がかかった。
というのが最初の文の最小限の構成です。
時間をあらわすとき、itを使います。
It is seven o'clock.今7時です。
It takes two minutes to go to the park.公園まで2分です。
it took a while 少し時間がかかった
なんのために時間がかかったかという補足がto不定詞で続きます。
to gather our thoughts 考えをまとめるのに
and そして
(to) think about how... 同じ種類の事故を防ぐための方法を考えるのに
