Algeria may not be as famous, but it is just as interesting. For a long time,
few people knew it was there. The ancient city,
which is on the border of the Sahara desert, was
buried under sand for nearly a thousand years,

Timgad was built in the year 100 by Emperor
Trajan for former Roman soldiers. However,
at its largest, over 10,000 Romans, North Africans, and Berbers all lived
together in the city. While many of them never saw Rome, they did make a
little copy of it in the desert. Timgad had roads, a large market, different places
to bathe, two schools, and a public library. The city even had a theater with
room for 3,500 people.
