恐らくlookは動詞として使われていると思います。
to lookがto不定詞の名詞的用法、differentは形容詞なのでto lookを修飾しているのだと思います。
ものすごく直訳すれば「それらは違った見えること(＝見え方、外見)を始めた」となるはずです。
