couldは助動詞canの過去形です。
使い方としては普通に過去のことを言う時
　例I could play tennis.
（私はテニスをすることが出来ました。【ごめんなさい、ちょっと訳があってるか微妙です】）

他にもお願いを丁寧に言うとき
　例Could you open the window？
（その窓をあけていただけますか？【これも訳間違ってるかもしれません】）
