Question

国強になりたい

It did bother me that they were looking at the eye as if it were all that mattered.という文なんですが、主節が過去形なので、仮定法の部分も過去を表すように仮定法過去完了を使わなければいけないのかと思うんですが、なぜ仮定法過去が使われているのでしょうか？
確かに仮定法過去完了にしたら主節からの時制がズレてそうにも感じるんですが、なんかしっくりきません
これってI wished you were a bird.で「あなたが鳥なら良かったのに」みたいに、that説の仮定法過去完了は主節の時制と一致するってことですか？
