oodbye, Mr. Chips is the story of a well-loved teacher at a boys'
school in England. Chips, whose real name was Chipping, taught
the classics at the fictional Brookfield School, which was based on the
Leys School in Cambridge.
Chips was a fresh-faced new teacher when he started at Brookfield in
1870. He was determined to show the students that he would not let
them misbehave. The first time he watched students in the large hall
during a study period, there were over 500 students waiting for the
chance to tease the new teacher. He heard someone slam down the lid
of a desk.
"You, over there. What's your name?"
"Colley, sir."
"All right, Colley. One hundred lines, as a punishment."
Chips had shown the students that he would make them behave how
he wanted and that he was not a weak teacher.
3 Years later, after leaving school, Colley became an important person
in the City of London, and his son entered Brookfield. "You know, your
father was the first boy who I punished as a teacher here 25 years ago,
and you are getting the same punishment," he said to the son, and the
class was filled with laughter. Later even Collo's
and Chi.
