問8なのですが、私はgreatを選び間違えました。
解答を見てshortが適することは知ったのですが、
greatが×な理由がわかりません。
また私は「great : 大きな」という意味で訳しました。

「わからない」という回答がgreatなものだとは考えにくいからです。何か画期的な答えが提示されているのなら納得できますが。

多分この問題ではgreatを素晴らしいという意味で訳してますね
実際greatは質問者さんの通り大きいという意味もあります。同じ大きいという意味でも、greatの場合は驚く程大きい･偉大だという意味で使われます。
それ以外はbigで、物の大きさを表すことが多いです。この文はそんなに驚いているような描写もないのでshortが適正だと思います！
