The king snake is a harmless reptile. It has developed a color pattern that is almost the same as that of the
poisonous coral snake. Its distinctive red, yellow, and black bands are enough to make predators hesitant to
eat it. Similarly, many flies have the same black and yellow stripes as bees and wasps. Most predators will
stay clear, though in fact these flies have no stingers. But surely the most innovative of these animals is the
mimic octopus. It can completely change not only its colors but also its body shape in order to look like the
venomous lionfish, the sea snake, and several other dangerous creatures in the ocean. These examples
show that animals don't have to be an extreme danger to survive in nature. For these Batesian mimics,
there's no shame in faking it!
