How many students of Ayumi's club を（ ）として考えると、
問題文は（ ）were playing the koto at the concert(?) となります。
（ ）に人数を入れて、文末の?を.に変えれば答えになります。
しかし、これだと長過ぎるので、wereの後を削除した Eight students were. が一般的な答え方なのです。
