Benjamin Franklin, was the first to make this statement. He did so in an essay written in 1748. That's a
long "money" ago.
In his essay, Franklin encouraged readers to spend their time more wisely and more
instead of wasting it. In comparing money to time, he wanted to illustrate two things. Firstly, being idle of
lazy was in fact the same as throwing money away. Secondly, working hard and making the most of one's
time was the best way to make money.
Though most would agree that Franklin was a very wise man, one can't help wondering whether
money really can be equated with time. In other words, are we really able to exchange money for time?
Can we always simply spend money, in order to have more time to spend? Some might answer “yes” and
say that, by paying others to do things for us, we can create more time for ourselves. You can, for instance,
pay your brother to wash the dishes in order to have more time for yourself.
However, can money purchase an extra hour in the day? Can it add an extra day to your life? Perhaps
what Franklin should have stated is that “Time is money, but money isn't always time.” When next time
you have some free time, it might pay
