ACh. receptor มีทั้งแบบ ionotropic กับ metabotropic ครับ ทั้งสองแบบเป็น ligand-gated transmembrane pt. ทั้งคู่
nicotine Ach. receptor เป็นแบบ ionotropic คือจะให้พวก ion ผ่านทาง channel โดยตรง จะเรียกว่า ligand-gated transmembrane ion channel ก็ได้
ส่วนอีกแบบคือ Muscarinic AChR เป็นแบบ matabotropic คือ แบบนี้จะ ไม่มี channel เหมือนด้านบน แต่ว่าจะให้ G protein ไปกระตุ้นหรือส่งสัญญาณให้กับ secondary messenger แทน วิธีนี้จะไปเปิด(หรือไม่ไปเปิด) channel ที่อื่นบน cell membrane ก็ได้ แต่จะไม่ใช่ที่ receptor โดยตรงครับ
