The Canary Islands are close to the northwest of Africa, and they are
famous for their beautiful nature. The name of the Canary Islands came from a kind of
large wild dog, the Perro de Presa Canario. People kept them for helping farm work. In
the 1600s, a ship from Spain stopped here and found a lot of wild dogs everywhere on these
islands. Although being around by a lot of the Canary dogs, the sailors surprisingly found
and decided to bring them home in cages. On the way back to Spain, the ship met a storm
a special kind of bird with a great voice. They named these yellow-green birds "canaries"
and almost turned over near the island of Elba. To save the ship, the Spanish sailors let
out all the birds. Surprisingly, and the canaries bravely flew to Italy. From then on, more
and more people fell in love with the music of canaries and kept them as songbirds. The
canaries finally found their way into the homes of Europe. Although people raise the
canaries for their great voices; however, they are quite different from those from the islands
hundreds of years ago.
