関係代名詞は、2つの文を一つにまとめるはたらきがあります。
例えば、例文は以下のようにまとめていると考えます。

1. I am using the dictionary(名詞). ＋ My brother lent it(代名詞・目的格 ＝ the dictionary) to me.
⇒　I am using the dictionary(名詞・物) <which/that my brother lent (to) me>.
※it(代名詞・目的格) → which/that(関係代名詞・目的格)

2. This is the best<最上級> dictionary(名詞・物). ＋ I have ever used it(代名詞・目的格).
⇒　This is the best dictionary <that I have ever used>.
※it(代名詞・目的格) → that(関係代名詞・目的格) 最上級＋物　→ 〇that　△which

3. My brother is a college student(名詞・人). ＋ He(代名詞・主格) studies American history.
⇒　My brother is a college student who studies American history.
