Britain celebrated the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023. This grand event, the name
of which is 16 from the Latin word "corona" meaning crown, marked the crowning of a new
monarch after a 70-year gap since Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. The ceremony took
17 in Westminster Abbey, a site that has hosted coronations for over 900 years, and followed
several traditional stages.
The coronation begins with the recognition stage, where the Archbishop of Canterbury
introduces the new king or queen to the gathered crowd, who then cheer, "God save the king!" or
"God save the queen!" 18 is the oath-taking, where the monarch promises to uphold the law
and the Church of England. This is followed by the anointing stage, during 19 the monarch is
anointed with holy oil while seated on the coronation chair, with a gold cloth covering the
ceremony from view.
During the investiture stage, famous coronation artifacts like the sceptre and orb are presented
before placing the crown on the monarch's head. Finally, dressed in jeweled golden artifacts and a
crown weighing over two kilograms, the new sovereign walks to the
seat as the newly crowned monarch of Britain.
