Each month a person consumes cosmetics (x1) and food (x2). The prices are p₁ = 100 and
P21. Her monthly income is w = 8000. A department store is having a promotion this
month. For every $2000 cash payment on cosmetics, the person can get a coupon of $200.
So, if a person pays $4000 cash to buy cosmetics, she can get two $200 coupons. But if she
pays $3999 cash to buy cosmetics, she gets only one $200 coupon. If she uses $3800 cash and
one $200 coupon to buy cosmetics, she can get x₁ = 40 and one $200 coupon. The coupons
expires at the end of this month and cannot be sold to others. x₁ and x2 can be any positive
real number or 0.
1. Suppose that the coupon can be used on cosmetics only. Draw the person's budget con-
straint.
2. Suppose that the coupon can be used on cosmetics or food. Draw the person's budget
constraint.
3. Are both budget sets convex?
