過去形の方が圧倒的に支持されますね。
現在形には、確定的な未来を示す場合、習慣的な事実を言う場合、不変の事実を言う場合、などがありますが、それらの訳に当てはめてみると、
on her birthday という時間が限定されているところで解釈しなければいけないので、確定的な未来かなぁ、と思ってもおかしくはないですが。
あくまで、確定的な未来として使う時は、飛行機やバスの発着などで使うのが大半なので、感覚的に合いません。

それに対して、過去形ならば、「誕生日の日にそういうことをした」という単なる事実を述べる文章として、違和感なく成立します。
