迷わず来る前に地図をいただいているから、時制的に解答のgiveを大過去にした方がいいのではないかと思いました。
この考えはどこが間違っているでしょうか。回答よろしくお願いします！

間違ってはないですけど
文脈からわかる場合、特に時系列に混乱が生じなさそうな場合は、わざわざ過去完了（大過去）にしないのです。

今回は
迷わずに来られました　というのが今日（のさっき）の話だろうし、
the other dayとあるから地図をくれたのはそれより前の話だとわかるので、わざわざまどろっこしく過去完了にしなくても良いということです。
