Prometheus Bound is a famous play that is considered by most scholars to be the work of the ancient
Greek playwright, Aeschylus. Often referred to as the father of tragedy, Aeschylus is thought to have
written around 80 plays, but only seven survive. One of these is Prometheus Bound.
Based on the story of the Titan punished by Zeus for giving fire to humans, the play contains just
seven characters. It starts with Prometheus being tied to a cliff in the rocky Caucasus Mountains by the
gods of power, violence and metalwork. Unable to free himself, Prometheus is then visited by three othe

him to apologize and beg Zeus for mercy. The tied-down Titan, however, doesn't regret sharing fire with
important figures. The first is Oceanus, god of the sea. He feels sorry for Prometheus and tries to convince
mankind, since many aspects of human civilization including cooking, metalwork, building and
medicine_depend on fire.
Prometheus is next visited by Io, a beautiful woman whom Zeus desired and turned into a cow in
order to hide her from his jealous wife, the goddess Hera. The latter, however, found out about the maiden
cow, and sent a fly to sting her and chase her around the world. Having the gift of foresight*, Prometheus
predicts Io will end up in Egypt and that, thirteen generations later, a descendant* of hers will set him free.
Finally, the messenger god Hermes arrives and demands that Prometheus reveal who will try to
overthrow* Zeus. Stubborn as ever, Prometheus refuses and is struck by one of angry Zeus' lightning
bolts.
