Although he was born in Illinois, Disney spent most of his childhood in Missouri, where he began drawing, painting, and selling pictures to neighbors and friends. When Disney was sixteen, he dropped out of school to join the army but was rejected for being underage. Wanting to do his part in World War I, he then joined the Red Cross at the age of seventeen to drive an ambulance* in France for a year. After the war ended, Disney moved back to Kansas City to become a professional newspaper artist and met a cartoonist named Ub Iwerks, with whom he created the famous character Mickey Mouse in 1928. However, the two didn't get along well and went their separate ways. Fortunately, they restored* their friendship afterwards, and Iwerks came back to Disney Studios in 1940, where he worked on various films and helped develop plans for Disneyland.
