¹Animals can play various roles in supporting people,
especially those with physical or mental difficulties. Some are
service animals, which are trained to assist physically challenged
people. ³Others, called emotional support animals (ESAs),
comfort people with mental health disorders. Overwhelmed by
stress or anxiety, these people may suddenly experience panic
attacks. However, living with an ESA can relieve such stress,
and can also be an alternative to medical care.
"In some countries, even an animal such as a parrot or a
hamster can be an ESA if the owner gets a document issued by
a medical professional. Some ESAs, just like service animals,
can ride with their owners on trains, buses, or planes. This
means that the owners can travel freely and feel safer in public
places. Thus, the companionship of ESAs gives people with
mental challenges more opportunities to expand their world.
10 In this way, ESAS make society more inclusive.
