Music During Surgery? (e) 2-37
Scientists have found that the soothing effect of music
benefits patients having eye surgery.
Studies show that those who listened to their choice of
music during surgery had a significantly lower heart rate
and blood pressure than patients who did not listen to
music.
Heart rate and blood pressure of all patients increased
the morning of surgery.. However, these measures of
cardiovascular stress dropped significantly in the music
group within ten minutes of tuning in, and remained low
throughout the surgery. The stress from surgery was
lower among the music patients, but their ability to cope
was higher. These ratings confirm the benefits of music
during surgery.
It has also been noted in other studies that surgeons who
play music of their choice during surgery feel that it
relieves stress and improves their performance.
In the words of one researcher, “If music was a drug,
everyone would want it. Patients like it. It's cheap and
effective, and has no negative side effects."
