A. Using Past Tense Verbs
Averb in the simple past tense expresses an action that happened in the past at a
definite time. Itis used with expressions of past time such asauhile ago, last week and last
gear. The past forms of regular verbs end with d or -ed. The past forms of irregular verbs are
changed in spelling

B. Using Sentence Patterns
Sentence Pattern 1. The commonly Ised sentence pattern in English
is subject+ rerb + object.

Note that the subject in this sentence is the actor: it (the boy) is the doer. Verb (kicks) is
the action word performed by the doer. Object (the ball) is the receiver of the verb kicks.
Whena verb has both an actor and receiver of the action it is called transitivE verb.

Sentence Pattern 2. There are verhs that don't have an object or receiver of an action.
They only have asubject and a verb.

Instead there's only an actor and the action. This kind of verb is called an intransitive
verb.
With intransitive verbs, there is often a prepositional phrase after the verb that tells us
where, when or how the action happened.
