"some of" is only used for nouns in specific form [the, that, those, ...].

✅ Some of the rice was wasted.
✅ I gave some of that rice to my friend.

✅ Some of us/you/them are very tired.
As you can see, "some of" implies a fixed (specific) group of things, of which some are selected.
For non-specific nouns, just use "some" :
