In the early 20th century in the Netherlands, Han van Meegeren started out as a portrait painter. He painted portraits for well-off
families but he failed to impress critics 39_his paintings and considered them unoriginal. Still, _40_proving the art critics wrong, he
then went to great lengths to copy the earlier Dutch masters' style, even using 17th century canvases and treating the paints to make them

appear old and hard. He then “found” the paintings which he 41 were from Vermeer and other Dutch masters. Van Meegeren became
