・最上級で

・序数詞の前で

・固有名詞とともに

・楽器を意味する名詞の前で
　例）I play the piano.
他にもいろいろありますが、よく使うのはこんな感じです。

①楽器の前につける。
例 I play the piano.
②共通認識がある (話し手にも聞き手にもどの○○を指しているかわかる。または、この状況において同じものは他になく、これしかない)ものの前につける。
例 I want the book. 私はその本が欲しいです。

私が知っているのはこれだけですかね…
一部辞書から引用しましたが、日本語に相当するものがないので、‘a'と対比ながら考えるのがよいそうです。
