問3の②の問題、答えは（control）（the）（ship）なのですが、theのところをJapanese としてはだめでしょうか？
単数なので冠詞がないとダメなのかと思ったのですが...それは置いておいて
質問に「日本の船」が書かれていなくても「the」は使えるのでしょうか？

文書を読んだ上での質問ですのでthe shipが何を指すのかは明らかです。
そしてそもそもjapanese shipであるとはどこにも書いていません。
日本人が制御できなかっただけで日本船である根拠はないのです。
(japanese shipという表現も微妙だと思いますがそこは一回置いておきます)
