Columbus Day is a national holiday in the US. The festival
takes place on the second Monday of October. It is to celebrate
Christopher Columbus' landing in America on October 12, 1492.
Other American countries except Canada celebrate it, too.
However, in countries like Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and
Argentina, the most common name for the holiday is Day of the
Race, remembering the first touch of two groups of people,
native Americans and Europeans.

Christopher Columbus (1450-1506) was an Italian explorer.
At his time, Europeans were crazy about things from the East,
like China or India But the way to China to do business by land
through the Silk Road was too long and too dangerous.
Columbus believed he could get to the East by sailing west.
People laughed at him but he didn't give up. He had the Spanish
queen's help at last. Although he didn't make his way to China,
Columbus finished four round-trip voyages between Spain and
the Americas during his life time. For Europeans, he opened a
gate to the New World.
