Past perfect
- Read the table. Put the verbs in brackets into the past
perfect or the past simple.
had + past participle
Affirmativeะ
IYou/He/We/They etc. had already left.
Negative:
IYOน/He/We/They etc. hadn't called.
Interrogativeะ
Had I/you/he/we/they etc. done it?
Short answers: Yes, I/you/he/we etc. had./No, \/you/he/we etc. hadn't.
We use the past perfect for
- actions which happened before another action in the past.
She had painted the room when he arrived.
- actions finished in the past whose result was visible in the past.
He was tired. He had worked since morning.
Time expressions used with the past perfect: before, after, already,
just, for, since etc.
(see) a ghost.
(be) in London for two years before
(move) to New York.
