Dinosaur Fossils In the past century, one of the most amazing findings by scientists has been dinosaur bones. Dinosaur bones also called fossils are the remains of old dinosaur skeletons. Sometimes scientists who discover dinosaur fossils just find footprints in the dirt. Other times, they find enough fossils to make a complete dinosaur. But how do dinosaur bones that are millions of years old get turned into fossils? How can something buried beneath dirt and sand last for so long? Fossil Formation When dinosaurs or other ancient animal or plant life dies, a gradual process begins. (A) Then the dead dinosaur is eventually covered by dirt and mud. (B) This leaves the hardest parts of the dinosaur- bones and teeth. (C) After thousands of years, the chemicals in the buried dinosaur's body go through a series of changes. (D) As the bone slowly decays, groundwater gets inside the bone. The minerals in the groundwater are replaced with the chemicals in the bone. These minerals are the same as the surrounding rock. As the dinosaur bone turns into a fossil, it becomes a heavy, rock-like version of the original dinosaur. It is now officially called a fossil. When scientists look for dinosaur fossils, they look for specific rock types. Fossils are usually found in either shale, siltstone, mudstone, or sandstone. Preservation (E) Preservation is an important word when studying fossils. (F) It means to keep something in the same condition for a long time. (G) One of the best examples of dinosaur fossils is in the Field Museum in Chicago. (H) The Tyrannosaurus Rex (or T-Rex) was the fiercest and largest dinosaur on the planet. It was a carnivore, or meat eater. T-Rex liked to eat smaller dinosaurs for dinner, using its powerful jaws to crush its victims. The skeleton of Sue was discovered in the dry plains of South Dakota in 1990 by Sue Henderson, a scientist. By studying prehistoric fossils, we can learn about life millions of years ago.

Kevin Kwan: Turning Intercultural Life into Art For 25 years, Hollywood did not make a movie with an all-Asian cast. Then a man named Kevin Kwan wrote a book, and made a film called Crazy Rich Asians. The story is about an Asian American economics professor named Rachel, who goes to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's wealthy family. The film was an instant success. It made 238.5 million dollars and became the most successful romantic comedy of the last ten years. Now Kwan is famous for bringing Asian themes to the big screen. The book has been translated into several languages, and he has published two more. In listening to him talk, it is clear that Kwan's own life has been the inspiration for his witty and affectionate view of wealthy Asian society. TIMES BESTSELLER CRAZY RICH ASIANS & NOVEL KEVIN KWAN Thank ish the's by and the CRAZY CRAZY RICH ASIANS KWAN CRAZY RICH ASIANS KEVIN HINA IRLFR LEVINA Kwan was born in Singapore, and his early life felt normal in many ways. His group of friends rode around the neighborhood on their bikes, and stole fruit from the neighbors. Then, when he was 11 years old, his family moved to Houston, Texas. In the US, Kwan attended high school, made friends, and had fun, just like others his age. He was not a great student, but he did well in creative writing. Eventually, he moved to New York City, where he became a successful design consultant, with many important clients. However, while he was living in New York, he learned his father was very sick. Kwan immediately returned to Houston to care for his father, and the two began to recall memories of Singapore. Kwan was fascinated by his father's stories, and they brought back details of his own childhood. He came from a very wealthy family. His grandmother's ancestors started one of the first banks, and his great uncle helped develop a widely used herbal ointment. It was normal for several generations to live together in an elegant home, with grand furnishings and beautiful gardens. Among his friends, there was a girl who received an expensive grand piano as a birthday present. Another friend, who was still too young to drive, owned matching white sports cars. As he reflected on his family history, Kwan decided to write the memories down as stories, which inspired his novel. These people had lived through Singapore's transition into a world financial center, and he had insight into the details of their lives. In addition, Kwan was also an immigrant, so he could explore the feelings and hopes of other Asian Americans and their children. He used his experiences to write his book, and then film, about immigrants and the worlds they came from. The film's success showed that audiences like seeing the funny, painful, and rewarding stories of families, no matter how crazy or rich they are.

Direction: Choose the best inference for each story 1. A small-town lawyer from Illinois, tall and lanky with an Adam's apple that could have gone down in the Guinness Book of Records had it existed in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, he changed the face of American history, steering it through a civil war that left both sides bloody. Who knows what more he could I have done had an assassin's bullet not cut him down. a. He had a big Adam's apple. b. He steered the nation through a civil war. 2. In the early nineteenth century, Shakespeare was the most widely performed playwright in both the North and Southeast. In the first half of the nineteenth century, English and American actors could always earn money by performing Shakespeare in towns both big and small. American audiences were famous for their participation in performances of Shakespeare's plays: They hurled eggs and tomatoes at the villains and cheered and whistled for the heroes. By the end of the nineteenth century, theater owners claimed that most ordinary people couldn't understand Shakespeare, and they were refusing to stage his plays. In the early 1800s, theater goers in big cities could often choose between three different productions of Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet; by the end of the nineteenth century, it was hard to find production of a Shakespeare play, let alone several. a. Early American audiences embraced Shakespeare's plays enthusiastically because they wanted to prove that they were as clever and sophisticated as their former British rulers. b. The role of Shakespeare in America changed dramatically as the nineteenth century drew to a close.

This might not be as unusual as you think. It seems that these days more and more people want to live somewhere special and out of the ordinary, and if they can't buy what they want they are quite 5 prepared to build it from scratch. If an underground home doesn't appeal to you, how about living in the tree tops? Dan Garner, a tree surgeon from Gloucestershire, certainly thinks that this is the way to go up in the world. 35 For John Mew and his wife Josephine their home really is their castle. They have built their own English castle in the Sussex countryside. The building is brand new with all the luxuries you would expect from a house that cost 1 more than £350,000 to build. However, when you first see it from the outside it would be easy to think that you are looking at an ancient monument. The building has a lot of the features of a traditional castle, including a keep, a moat and a drawbridge. "My choice of house is 1 somewhat eccentric and building it was very hard work, but we've got the perfect place to live," Mew says. Although some would say that the building is impractical and may be cold in harsh British winters, he certainly has got a unique and spacious home. "When our family became short of space at home our solution was to build a luxury tree house in the garden. The tree house is built into a spruce tree six metres above the ground. It has one main room, a bedroom and a balcony running around two sides." Garner is so happy 40 with this practical extension to his home that he thinks he can convince more people of the benefits of living in the trees. He wants to set up his own enterprise making more of the deluxe tree dwellings, saying, "Tree houses are airy, secure and comfortable and the only disadvantage 45 is that they might not be suitable for people who suffer from hay fever or a fear of heights!" 2 If you don't look carefully, you might not even see the home that Jonathan Ridley-Jones and Shanon Ridd built at all! That's because the house is a converted underground water tank. The only thing that can be seen from the surface is a door leading into the hillside. "We've 2 never wanted to live in an ordinary house," Shanon says. "Living below ground means that our home is quiet and very cosy none of the usual draughts. It doesn't damage the local surroundings and has very low fuel bills. Some of our friends find it dark and feel shut in 3 when they first visit, but they soon get used to it!" Even people who live in more ordinary settings sometimes can't resist doing something to make them stand out from the crowd. One extreme example of this 50 is Bill Heines' house in Headington, Oxfordshire. Until one morning in 1986, his house looked much like all the others in his street, when suddenly overnight a 7.5 m long fibreglass shark appeared to have crashed through the roof. The shark was a sculpture by local artist John 55 Buckley. At first some people complained that it might be dangerous or that it spoilt the look of the neighbourhood, but engineers checked that the sculpture was safe and the 'Headington shark' has become a well-known and popular landmark. It seems that no matter where you live, 60 you can always do something to make sure your house says something about who you are. 4 5 D It Why Ridle AI B 6 C D 7 Wh Ric A B 4 C D V
