99 The paper currency appearing in the 19th century English novels
consists of notes issued by individual banks and not by a central
government authority. In the 19th century virtually any bank, large
or small, could issue its own notes representing a promise to pay, in
gold, the stated amount to the bearer upon demand.

odds with technologists, viewing technology as a harmful force
