関係代名詞と関係副詞をまとめて「関係詞」といいますが、関係詞はその直後の文の一部(節といいますね)と一緒になって、直前の名詞を修飾したりします。
その「直前の名詞」を「先行詞」といいますが、
関係副詞whyの先行詞が「the reason」だけなのです。

例) He told me the reason why he was absent.
(彼は私に彼が欠席した理由を話した)

ところがこの関係副詞whyというのはおかしな単語でして
先行詞the reasonか関係副詞whyのどちらか片方を省略して使うことが多いのです。
もともとThis is the reason why～という文(これが～の理由です)も「the reason」か「why」のどちらか片方を省略します。たぶん理由は「片方なくても分かる」とかそんな感じでしょう。
「これが～な理由です」という訳でも悪くないのですが、熟語とか慣用句的に「こんなわけで～だ」みたいな訳をつけた方が英文を前から読んで戻らずに速く読む、という観点でも良い、という訳です。
理由と書いて「わけ」と読む、みたいに覚えると連想しやすいかな。
