a thousandで1000だからですね。
1000ずつの単位で言うと
1000はa thousand ・one thousand
2000はtwo thousand
3000はthree thousand
two とかthreeですがこのthousandにはsを基本的につけません
thousandでsをつけるのは
thousands of〜 数千の〜 と言うときだけ
これは1000がいくつかあるというのを複数形のsで表しているからです。
で、1000でも2000でも3000でも
複数なので
a thousand 1000の years 年
という感じでyearsにはsがつきます
