「What I want to say is he is smart.」みたいに言うことは無いのですか？
例えば、「彼が失敗した理由は、彼が怠惰であったし、勤勉でなかったからだ。」を英訳すると「The reason why he failed is that he was lazy and that he didn’t work hard.」になりますか？
また、上の英文でhe was lazy and didn’t work hard」とすることはできますか？
