なのですが、英文の最後の that seemed like a sort of softball の表現が分かりません。

分かりそうな方よろしくお願いします。

ここでは、「簡単な」という意味です。questionと一緒に使われます。

softball question = 答えやすい質問、難しくない質問

くだらない質問とも訳されることがあるようです。

a sort of… いわば、〜みたいな、どちらかといえば
softball… 簡単な、難しくない

直訳「どちらかといえば簡単と思われる」

お手持ちの訳ではそれを「簡単な」だけ出しているみたいですね。
