英語のエキスパートとかそういうのではなく1高校生なので完璧には言えないでしょうが、考え方を書いときます。
筆者の友人たちは痛々しいことを筆者に実際に相談しに来たわけですが、(4)のところにはwishing my friends(4)とあるので、文意は｢誰か他の人を当たって欲しかった｣という文意になりますよね。するとこの願いは事実(実際に起こったこと)に反しますから、過去の話ではありますが仮定法となり、had holdとなるのでしょう。
