Before 1870 there were millions of *buffaloes in North America They lived in the West
between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. For hundreds of years, *Native
Americans hunted them.

built between the East and the West. A lot of white people came to the West. At first they
hunted the buffalo as a sport. The white hunters shot buffaloes from railroad cars. Soon
6they found they could make money out of the buffalo. They began to hunt buffaloes for
their skins. In only three years, from 1871 to 1874, the white hunters killed nine million of
15 them. In 1885 only 75 buffaloes were left. Many Native Americans died too, because they

Today buffaloes are kept in safe places. And there are now over 25,000 buffaloes in North
America.
